DBP Extends P100-M Loan Facility to Boost Financing for Farmers, Fisherfolk

MANILA – The Development Bank of the Philippines (DBP) has approved a PHP100-million credit facility for Quezon-based Bayanihan Bank to strengthen financial support for small-scale farmers and fisherfolk seeking to expand their livelihood and business operations.

DBP President and Chief Executive Officer Michael de Jesus said the funding will enable Bayanihan Bank to provide much-needed financing to its agricultural and fisheries sector clients, helping them increase productivity, improve market access, and generate higher incomes.

The credit assistance may be used for various operational needs, including working capital, acquisition and upgrading of equipment, and the improvement of facilities related to farming and fishing activities.

“We view this partnership with Bayanihan Bank as a strategic move to ramp up DBP’s support for the agriculture and fisheries sector, recognizing its vital role in promoting inclusive economic growth, particularly among marginalized communities,” de Jesus said on Friday.

The loan facility is funded through DBP’s Agriculture, Fisheries, and Rural Development (AFRD) Credit Facility, a program designed to provide accessible financing to enterprises and institutions serving rural communities.

As of April, DBP has approved a total of PHP578.7 million in loans for 32 borrowers under the AFRD program, benefiting more than 1,500 farmers and fisherfolk nationwide.

De Jesus added that the state-owned bank is keen on expanding its network of partners, including cooperatives, rural banks, and microfinance institutions, to further increase access to financial services in underserved areas.

DBP, the country’s ninth-largest bank with total assets of PHP1.041 trillion, provides financing support to key development sectors, including infrastructure and logistics, micro, small and medium enterprises, environmental initiatives, and social services and community development.
