Batac City — Farmers and local officials in Ilocos Norte welcomed the opening of the province’s first and largest agricultural trading center in Barangay Bil-loca, Batac City, on Thursday.
The PHP30-million facility, funded by the Department of Agriculture, aims to provide accredited farmers’ associations and cooperatives with a dedicated trading space where they can sell their products directly to institutional buyers. The initiative is expected to reduce transportation costs while promoting locally produced agricultural goods.
Wilfredo Valdez, a farmer-leader from Pasuquin, Ilocos Norte, said the new trading hub encourages farmers to increase the production of high-value crops that are in demand in the market.
According to Valdez, the facility provides farmers with an accessible location where they can directly market their harvests. Onion growers in Pasuquin, he added, have already pledged to supply at least 100 tons of white onions to Jollibee Foods Corporation, while any surplus produce will be sold at the trading center to other buyers.
During the blessing and inauguration ceremony, Cecilia Araneta-Marcos, governor of Ilocos Norte, expressed appreciation to the province’s farmers for their continued efforts in supporting food security.
She described the project as a significant opportunity for local farmers and producers, as it allows them to connect directly with traders and expand their market access.
The governor also assured that the provincial government will remain committed to strengthening the agricultural sector and improving the livelihood of farmers in the province.
The trading center occupies a 1,716-square-meter area located near the Batac City public market. The facility is equipped with a hauling truck and marketing tools, including weighing scales, plastic crates, and pallets, to make product handling and transport more efficient for farmers and traders.
