DepEd Urges STEM Students to Use Science and Technology for Better Living

MANILA – Department of Education Secretary Sonny Angara on Wednesday encouraged Filipino learners to develop technology-based solutions that can help address national and global challenges during the opening of the 2026 National Science and Technology Fair in Quezon City.

Organized by the DepEd, the annual fair is considered the country’s main platform for high school students to present research and innovations in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).

Carrying the theme “Harnessing the Unknown: Powering the Future Through Science and Innovation,” this year’s event highlights the role of young innovators in creating solutions for sustainable development and technological progress.

Angara encouraged students to focus their research on key areas such as sustainable energy, food production and nutrition, and technology-driven disaster preparedness.

He also linked the initiative to the vision of Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. of maximizing science and technology to improve the quality of life of Filipinos.

The education chief cited the recent global recognition received by students from Patin-ay National High School in Agusan del Sur for their research on medicinal plants, describing it as evidence of the strong research potential of Filipino youth.

Angara added that by mastering emerging technologies, students can help build a more innovative and resilient “Bagong Pilipinas.”

The NSTF also serves as the country’s qualifying stage for the International Science and Engineering Fair, the world’s largest pre-college science competition.

Students from different regions compete in various activities, including the Tuklas STEM Research Competition, which features projects in life science, physical science, robotics and intelligent machines, and mathematics and computational science.

Other highlights include the STEM Innovation Expo, showcasing practical solutions in areas such as food safety, water conservation, renewable energy, cybersecurity, and healthcare.

The event also features the STEM Academy conference and the Agham Bayanihan exhibit, where partner institutions present new technologies and services to the public.
