MANILA – Ateneo de Manila University edged University of Santo Tomas, 10-9, in the UAAP Season 88 Men's Baseball Tournament on Wednesday at the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex in Malate, Manila.
The Blue Eagles produced a decisive seven-run rally in the fourth inning and held off the Golden Sox in the final frames to improve their record to 2-2, good for third place in the standings.
Joaquin Mariano, Daniel Fabella, and Anton Odulio led Ateneo’s offensive burst. Mariano highlighted the inning with his lone hit of the game — a double to center field that drove in Zane Prades, Odulio, and Angelo Bernardo.
Ateneo head coach Pepe Jose said the team relied on its experienced players to secure the much-needed win.
On the mound, Mikaelo Osorio started the game and earned the victory after allowing four earned runs on four hits while striking out six batters. Joshua de Juras came in as reliever and secured the save, conceding two earned runs on four hits while helping keep UST scoreless for several innings.
UST managed to score four runs during the third and fourth innings, highlighted by right fielder Mark Joseph Cabase, who collected two hits and drove in four RBIs. However, the Golden Sox were unable to score in the final four innings.
Ateneo is set to face University of the Philippines in a rescheduled game on Sunday at 8 a.m. at the same venue.
UST, meanwhile, closed the first round of the tournament with a 1-4 win-loss record.
