UP Defeats NU to Stay on Top of UAAP Men’s Tennis



MANILA – University of the Philippines strengthened its hold on the lead after edging defending champion National University, 3-2, in the UAAP Season 88 Men's Tennis Tournament on Wednesday at Colegio San Agustin in San Jose del Monte, Bulacan.

The Fighting Maroons secured their ninth victory against one loss after the doubles pair of Andrei Jarata and Carl Tan defeated Miguel Vicencio and Jules Lazaro, 6-3, 6-4, in the second doubles match of the best-of-five tie.

UP first gained a point when Lance Fernandez beat Alexis Acabo, 6-3, 6-2. However, NU fought back as Andrei Padao downed Loucas Fernandez, 6-4, 6-4, and Isaac Lim defeated Heinz Carbonilla, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3, to take a 2-1 advantage.

UP leveled the score after Raymund Goco and Miguel Iglupas outplayed Angil Balaoing and Christian Padilla, 7-5, 6-3, in the first doubles match.

Despite the loss, NU dropped to third place with a 7-3 record, tied with University of the East, which dominated Ateneo de Manila University, 5-0.

For UE, Allyson Cabanilla started the sweep with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Vito Singson. JB Aguilar then beat JD Velez, 6-1, 6-3, while Kian Sanchez dominated Gabby Calilung, 6-2, 6-0. In doubles, Mark Dave Palanas and Kent Morales blanked Gab Quintana and Lukas Yupangco, 6-0, 6-0, before Marc Suson and RJ Baje completed the sweep with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over JB Cuarto and JC Pabillore.

Meanwhile, University of Santo Tomas defeated Adamson University, 4-1, to improve to 9-2 and secure second place.

UST opened with three straight wins as Richard Bautista and Nash Agustines defeated Angelo Rosales and Lander Butcon, 2-6, 6-1, 10-7. Ericjay Tangub then routed Albretch Job, 6-2, 6-0, while Evan Bacalso beat Nikko Lumahang, 6-2, 6-3.

Miecoz Candelasa secured Adamson’s lone point after outlasting Mcleen Gomera, 6-4, 3-6, 7-5. The duo of Steven Sonsona and Al Zayeed Baid later defeated John Kenneth Jumamoy and Herald Aton, 6-2, 6-4, to seal the victory.

Adamson dropped to 2-9, while Ateneo remained winless after 11 matches.
