Department of Tourism (DOT) Undersecretary Shahlimar Hofer Tamano emphasized the importance of promoting domestic tourism during the opening of the “Business to Consumer” session of the regional travel fair in Baguio City.
Tamano said initiatives such as regional travel fairs provide opportunities for tourism enterprises to generate income, create jobs, and encourage Filipinos to rediscover the country’s natural beauty, cultural heritage, and local communities even amid economic challenges.
He noted that tourism goes beyond travel experiences, stressing that it also strengthens communities, supports livelihoods, and helps preserve the nation’s culture and identity for future generations.
The three-day travel fair, organized by the Tourism Promotions Board, is part of ongoing efforts to stimulate local economic activity through the promotion of tourism destinations, products, and services.
The event also serves as a platform for tour operators, agencies, and tourism stakeholders in the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR) to connect with service providers and develop competitive travel packages tailored to different budgets.
According to Tamano, regional travel fairs have become important drivers of local economic growth and have demonstrated resilience through innovation and adaptation, particularly during the pandemic and current economic pressures.
At least 70 exhibitors from different parts of the country are participating in the business-to-consumer sessions, showcasing various tourism offerings and destination experiences.
Meanwhile, Jovi Ganongan said the Cordillera region remains proud to highlight its unique beauty, resilience, creativity, and rich cultural heritage through sustainable tourism initiatives.
Ganongan added that the region continues to develop tourism products that promote environmental sustainability, cultural preservation, and community participation, which are considered essential pillars of a more responsible and inclusive tourism industry.
Data from the Philippine Statistics Authority showed that tourism contributed 8.9 percent to the country’s Gross Domestic Product in 2025, helping generate employment opportunities and stimulate growth in local communities nationwide.
