MANILA — Malacañang on Wednesday rejected claims that Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. is preoccupied with building his legacy, stressing that his priority remains governance and addressing current national challenges.
In a radio interview, Palace Press Officer Claire Castro said the President is focused on key sectors such as agriculture, healthcare, and education, while continuing efforts to curb corruption.
She emphasized that Marcos is intent on ensuring reforms—particularly anti-corruption measures—are sustained beyond his administration.
The statement came in response to criticism from Paolo Duterte, who claimed the President is more concerned about his legacy than addressing rising costs linked to global oil supply disruptions.
Castro dismissed the remarks, saying they overlook the administration’s ongoing efforts to mitigate the impact of oil price volatility caused by tensions in the Middle East.
She cited government actions such as securing fuel supplies, providing subsidies, and coordinating agencies under a “whole-of-government” approach to ease the burden on the public.
Castro also pointed to the administration’s initiatives to boost agricultural productivity, expand access to healthcare, and improve the education system.
In a pointed remark, she added that the President aims to strengthen institutions without resorting to violence, contrasting this with the controversial anti-drug campaign of former president Rodrigo Duterte.
