LA TRINIDAD, Benguet — Mayor Roderick Awingan has renewed his call for gasoline stations in the municipality to allow farmers to purchase fuel using portable containers to support their agricultural activities.
In a media interview on Tuesday, Awingan said local fuel retailers have been reminded to accommodate farmers who need gasoline or diesel for farm operations, including running generators, irrigation pumps, and other equipment.
He emphasized that legitimate beneficiaries are properly registered under the Registry System for Basic Sectors in Agriculture (RSBSA) and the municipal agriculture office, and can present identification cards to verify their purpose.
Existing guidelines from the Department of Energy (DOE) permit farmers and fishers to buy petroleum products using containers such as jerry cans and drums, provided these are used for agricultural and fishing machinery like tractors, irrigation systems, and marine equipment.
However, such transactions must still comply with regulations on fair fuel distribution and anti-hoarding measures.
Awingan noted that the policy is especially helpful for farmers who do not own vehicles and would otherwise face difficulty accessing fuel for their day-to-day farm needs.
To formalize the directive, the mayor earlier issued Executive Order No. 41-2026 on March 16, mandating all gasoline stations in La Trinidad to allow qualified and registered farmers to purchase fuel in containers, subject to proper safety and verification procedures.
