TACLOBAN CITY – At least 16 hog raisers from the island town of Limasawa in Southern Leyte have received indemnity payments from the Department of Agriculture (DA) following losses caused by an outbreak of African swine fever (ASF).
The beneficiaries were given a total of PHP1.104 million sourced from the DA’s quick response fund, compensating them for hogs culled during mandatory depopulation efforts in January.
Limasawa Mayor Melchor Petracorta expressed gratitude for the assistance, noting that it would help affected farmers rebuild their livelihoods and support the town’s food security goals.
Among the recipients was Michelle Tabamo from Magallanes village, who said the financial aid would allow her to resume hog raising after losing six pigs due to ASF.
Another beneficiary, Christian Cabajes, said the support would help him recover from losses sustained when the outbreak hit the hog-raising venture he started after returning from overseas work.
Meanwhile, Al Obinguar encouraged recipients to use the funds to restart their operations while observing strict biosecurity measures to prevent future outbreaks and safeguard the local swine industry.
The DA reiterated the importance of continued vigilance and proper farm management practices to protect livestock and ensure the sustainability of hog production in affected areas.
