Normally, I try to avoid working on my birthday. This year, however, my writing day for the Philippine News Agency happened to fall on the same date. Instead of skipping the day entirely, I decided to reflect on what birthdays really mean—especially at a time when many people feel that there is little to celebrate.
Not long ago, I greeted a friend on his birthday. His response surprised me. Rather than sounding grateful, he said he could not find any reason to celebrate. He pointed to the many problems around us social tensions, political issues, scandals, and personal struggles. For him, these were enough to take away the joy of a birthday.
While his concerns were understandable, I offered a different perspective. As long as a person is alive to see another birthday, that alone is already a reason to celebrate. Every birthday is a reminder that life continues. Despite all the problems that surround us, the simple fact that we are still here still breathing, still able to try again—is something worth appreciating.
This does not mean ignoring the challenges of the world. The issues affecting our country, our communities, and our families are real and deserve attention. But there is also value in allowing ourselves a brief pause from those concerns. A birthday can serve as a reminder that life is not only about struggles but also about gratitude and renewal.
Another lesson that comes with age is learning to manage emotions. In today’s fast-moving and often tense environment, anger and frustration can easily take control. Yet maturity teaches us that reacting with calm and reason is far more effective than reacting with rage. Sometimes the strongest response is patience and self-control.
Birthdays also remind us to rediscover the simple joys of life. In the rush of deadlines, responsibilities, and obligations, it is easy to forget that life should also include moments of happiness and rest. Taking a day to step back, enjoy small pleasures, and reconnect with what matters most can feel like pressing a reset button.
Most importantly, birthdays offer an opportunity for reflection. They encourage us to look back on the past year its successes, failures, and lessons and to ask ourselves how we can do better moving forward. Reflection allows us to grow, to correct our mistakes, and to approach the coming year with renewed purpose.
In the end, a birthday is more than just another date on the calendar. It is a reminder that life continues despite its difficulties. It is a chance to pause, reflect, and move forward with hope.
And in a world often filled with uncertainty, that alone is something worth celebrating.
