Filipinas Hopeful of Securing Playoff Spot in AFC Women’s Asian Cup

MANILA – The Philippines women's national football team remains hopeful of advancing to the playoff stage of the ongoing AFC Women's Asian Cup in Australia.

Head coach Mark Torcaso expressed optimism after the Filipinas defeated Iran women's national football team, 2-0, in their final group-stage match at the Cbus Super Stadium in Queensland on Sunday.

Torcaso said the team is hoping their goal difference will be enough to secure a place in the next round as one of the best third-placed teams in the tournament.

The Filipinas ended the group stage with a 1-0-2 win-draw-loss record after handing Iran its third consecutive defeat. The Iranian squad, missing two players due to injuries sustained in earlier matches against South Korea women's national football team and Australia women's national football team, was eliminated from playoff contention.

Teams that have already secured spots in the next round include South Korea and Australia from Group A, North Korea women's national football team and China women's national football team from Group B, and Japan women's national football team from Group C.

Meanwhile, Chinese Taipei women's national football team kept its hopes alive for the final playoff berth after a 1-0 victory over Vietnam women's national football team last Saturday.

Vietnam and Uzbekistan women's national football team are still competing for the remaining third-place qualification spots, with Uzbekistan scheduled to play Bangladesh women's national football team in its final group-stage match.
