MANILA – University of Santo Tomas defeated University of the Philippines, 5-1, during the UAAP Season 88 softball tournament held at the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex in Malate, Manila on Tuesday.
The victory marked UST’s first win over UP since their encounter in Season 86 on March 6, 2024. UP, which earlier secured a 6-3 victory against defending champion Adamson University last Saturday, absorbed its first loss after three games.
Following the result, UST joined UP and Adamson at the top of the standings. Adamson also earned a 3-1 win over De La Salle University in the day’s other matchup.
La Salle now holds a 1-4 record, while Ateneo de Manila University remained without a win after five games.
UST opened the scoring in the third inning when Gen Degollacion delivered a sacrifice fly that allowed Erika Fernandez to cross home plate. The Growling Tigresses widened their lead in the fifth inning as rookie Anna Rose Macatbag recorded her second hit before fellow newcomer Jaime Bueza drove her in with a run batted in.
UST head coach Sandy Barredo praised the performance of the team’s younger players, noting that the rookies stepped up and contributed to the victory.
Macatbag led UST with three hits, while Bueza added two hits and two RBIs. Degollacion also produced two RBIs, including a double in the sixth inning that brought Helga Campos home.
Barredo added that the team focused on studying UP’s hitters and adjusting their defense accordingly, which helped limit the opponent’s offensive output
