Lifting Minds, Not Just Medals: The Inspiring Story of Olympian Hydilyn Diaz

Olympic gold medalist Hidilyn Diaz-Naranjo continues to inspire Filipinos not only in sports but also in education and personal growth.

During the foundation day celebration of the University of Saint Louis Tuguegarao (USLT), Diaz-Naranjo received a Doctor of Humanities, honoris causa, in recognition of her achievements and contributions as an athlete, mentor, and advocate of lifelong learning.

Speaking to graduates and the media, Diaz-Naranjo encouraged young people to value both sports and education. She said the lessons learned in sports—such as discipline, patience, and perseverance—are the same values needed to succeed in school and in life.

Diaz-Naranjo, who also teaches at the University of the Philippines, said sports help build character and inspire people to strive for excellence while bringing pride to the country.

Her husband and coach, Julius Naranjo, also shared plans to expand opportunities for young athletes through the HD Weightlifting Academy, including a possible training program in partnership with USLT.

Coach Noli Eala said the initiative aims to prepare athletes not only to compete but also to mentor future generations.

Diaz-Naranjo reminded students that success takes time and dedication.

“It takes time to be a champion. Trials are part of the journey,” she said.

Through her work as an athlete, teacher, and mentor, Diaz-Naranjo continues to encourage young Filipinos to pursue their dreams with determination and purpose. (OTB/PIA Region 2)
