A short stop in Catbalogan City turned into an adventure for Baris Devrim, a 42-year-old teacher from Calgary, Canada. While traveling from Calbayog to Tacloban, he decided to pause after hearing about Bangon Falls from hotel ads and asking City Hall for guidance.
Devrim visited the Catbalogan City Tourism Office on February 27 to plan his trip. The office arranged a guide and coordinated with Barangay San Andres for his visit the next day.
On February 28, he rode a motorcycle to the barangay and trekked 30 to 40 minutes through muddy, rocky paths with water pipes to reach the waterfall. He described the falls as “bright blue” with a “big natural pool” and enjoyed a refreshing swim under the hot sun. Devrim also called the area peaceful, surrounded by lush jungle.
He said a guide was essential because there are no clear trails or signs, and visitors need to be careful of slippery paths and pipes, which are part of the city’s drinking water system.
Devrim reminded tourists to travel responsibly—bring water, wear proper shoes, and keep the environment clean. He also praised Catbalogan as a convenient stopover for exploring waterfalls and caves in the region.
The city is developing Bangon Falls as an eco-tourism site, training local stakeholders and planning infrastructure to support sustainable tourism.
