MANILA – Far Eastern University (FEU) moved closer to completing a first-round sweep after defeating the University of the Philippines (UP), 25-14, 25-22, 28-26, in the UAAP Season 88 men’s volleyball tournament at the Smart Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City.
Amet Bituin led the Tamaraws with 17 points, along with seven receptions and four digs, as FEU secured its sixth straight victory. Doula Ndongala also contributed 12 points, highlighted by eight blocks.
FEU head coach Eddieson Orcullo acknowledged that the team still has areas to improve, particularly after committing 24 errors during the match.
The Tamaraws will next face the University of Santo Tomas (4-1) on March 14 at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
UP remained in fourth place with a 2-3 record despite a strong performance from Olayemi Raheem, who scored 16 points. Tommy Castrodes and Milven Francisco added seven and six points, respectively.
In another match, defending champion National University (NU) swept Ateneo de Manila University, 25-22, 25-23, 25-22, to claim solo second place with a 5-1 record.
NU coach Dante Alinsunurin said close matches like this help the team build confidence as they prepare for the second round and the playoffs.
Jade Disquitado paced NU with 16 points and 11 receptions, while Michaelo Buddin added 12 points, five digs, and five receptions. Leo Ordiales chipped in 11 points, Obed Mukaba scored eight, and setter Greg Ancheta delivered 20 excellent sets.
NU will wrap up its first-round campaign against De La Salle University on March 15 at the Mall of Asia Arena.
Kennedy Batas, the reigning Most Valuable Player, scored 13 points for Ateneo, which dropped to fifth place with a 2-4 record.
