MANILA – National University Nazareth School (NUNS) defeated De La Salle Zobel, 83-66, on Sunday to clinch the No. 1 seed and a twice-to-beat advantage in the UAAP Season 88 boys’ basketball tournament at Blue Eagle Gym in Quezon City.
Kurl Figueroa led the Bullpups with 14 points and rebounds, while Corian Cabantog and Rhon-j Matias added 12 and 10 points, respectively. The victory extended NUNS’ winning streak to 10 games, allowing the team to finish the elimination round with a 12-2 record.
Head coach Kevin de Castro said the team learned valuable lessons during the winning run, emphasizing the importance of staying focused and avoiding complacency.
“We learned a lot from our 10-game winning streak. The players stayed disciplined and continued to work on improving every game,” de Castro said.
Maco Dabao contributed 10 points and four steals for De La Salle Zobel, which secured the No. 4 seed with an 8-6 record.
In another game, the University of the East defeated Adamson University, 77-73, to end the eliminations in fifth place with a 5-9 record.
Drei Lorenzo paced the Junior Warriors with 19 points and eight rebounds, while Mhico Abelar added 12 points, three rebounds, and three assists.
Jarl Artango scored 18 points and dished out six assists for Adamson, which finished with a 4-10 record — its lowest standing in nine years since ending the 2017 season with a 2-12 mark.
