PNP warns vloggers vs. unauthorized use of police uniforms

MANILA – The Philippine National Police (PNP) on Thursday warned content creators against using police uniforms in online stunts or videos without proper authorization.

In a statement, PNP chief Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said impersonating law enforcement officers—even for entertainment—can lead to legal consequences.

The warning came after a viral photo circulated online showing a vlogger wearing the PNP’s ceremonial blue uniform, prompting authorities to launch an investigation.

“We are taking this matter seriously. We are now conducting an investigation to determine accountability and to send a message that there are consequences for the unauthorized use of police uniforms,” Nartatez said.

Under Article 179 of the Revised Penal Code of the Philippines, the unauthorized use of police uniforms or insignia is punishable by imprisonment of up to six months.

Nartatez also reminded the public about the significance of the PNP uniform and insignia, noting that they symbolize state authority and the sacrifices made by police officers.

At the same time, he acknowledged that modern technologies such as artificial intelligence can be misused to create misleading images or videos, including content that falsely depicts individuals as police officers.

“We urge everyone to verify content before sharing because disinformation undermines public trust and safety,” he said.
