Bamboo Textile Hub Creates New Livelihood Opportunities in Agusan del Norte

In Butuan City, members of the Kapunungan sa mga Mag-uuma sa Simbalan Inc. (KAMASI) are benefiting from Mindanao’s first Bamboo Textile Fiber Innovation Hub established in Barangay Simbalan, Buenavista.

The facility was developed through the Department of Science and Technology – Philippine Textile Research Institute (DOST-PTRI) and uses advanced bamboo textile technology that extracts fibers from bamboo to produce yarn, woven fabrics, and other textile materials.

According to DOST-PTRI engineer Rojen Galicio, the technology enables a more efficient and environmentally friendly method of processing bamboo into textile fibers. The project is part of the Bamboo Textile PH program, which aims to revive the country’s textile industry using sustainable and locally sourced materials.

Barangay Simbalan in Buenavista was selected as the project site due to its abundant bamboo resources, strong community interest in bamboo-based livelihood programs, and support from the local government and partner organizations.

Through a secured market arrangement with DOST-PTRI, members of KAMASI now have a guaranteed buyer for their bamboo supply. This arrangement provides farmers with a steady source of income while encouraging sustainable bamboo cultivation in the region.

The project has also generated jobs for community members involved in bamboo fiber extraction and processing. Farmers are gaining additional income from bamboo, which previously had limited commercial use.

Maria Angelica Rosedell Amante expressed the provincial government’s continued support for the initiative and encouraged cooperative members to sustain the project through unity and dedication.

Meanwhile, Joselito T. Roble highlighted the importance of the hub, noting that the project could significantly improve the lives of local farmers and cooperative members.

DOST-PTRI continues to monitor the project’s progress by assessing production output, operational efficiency, and the socio-economic benefits gained by bamboo growers and their families.

KAMASI president Charlito Dutosme said the initiative has transformed how the community views bamboo, opening new opportunities for livelihood and economic growth.

Community members have also undergone training on machine operation and fiber processing, equipping them with the skills needed to manage the facility and participate in the expanding bamboo textile industry.

The Bamboo Textile Fiber Innovation Hub in Agusan del Norte marks a significant milestone for the Philippine textile sector, showing how science, innovation, and local resources can help strengthen rural economies and support sustainable development.
