BFAR Promotes Smart Fishery Technologies for La Union Communities

In Pugo, La Union, the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) Ilocos Region recently held its 68th Fishery Industry Forum to introduce technologies and support programs aimed at improving the livelihoods of local fisherfolk.

The event, held on February 27 at the Upland Training Center, gathered representatives from national government agencies, technology experts, and aquaculture entrepreneurs. The forum focused on sharing innovations and practical solutions to strengthen sustainable fisheries and promote the region’s growing blue economy.

According to BFAR Ilocos officer-in-charge Regional Director Girly Dela Peña, the forum serves as a platform for fisherfolk to learn about new policies, projects, and support programs offered by the government.

During the event, BFAR distributed 218,000 tilapia and ulang fingerlings worth PHP 91,550 to communities in Caba, Naguilian, Pugo, Bangar, San Gabriel, and Bacnotan. The initiative aims to improve household food security, increase income, and promote sustainable aquaculture practices.

The agency also provided two stainless tables and eight cooker boxes valued at PHP 97,800 to four fisherfolk associations in Pugo, Burgos, and Bagulin through the Special Area for Agricultural Development (SAAD) program. Meanwhile, the Narvacan Fisherfolk Association in Sto. Tomas received PHP 250,000 to upgrade its cooking shed, improving both safety and productivity.

Local fisherfolk expressed appreciation for the support. Nancy Sabado, president of the Imelda Kay Ganda Fisheries Association, shared that the cooler boxes provided to their group would help improve their livelihood and supplement their farming activities.

Provincial officials also encouraged fisherfolk to register with cooperatives to gain easier access to government assistance. Mario Eduardo Ortega, through Executive Assistant Denver Badua, highlighted the benefits of cooperative membership in accessing national programs and livelihood support.

Aside from equipment and financial assistance, the forum featured discussions on sustainable aquaculture practices, including improved fish hatching techniques, diversified fish farming, and modern salt-making methods. Authorities also emphasized the importance of protecting fish stocks and enforcing regulations against illegal fishing.

The event further provided a one-stop assistance center where participants could connect with different government agencies for help with business registration, financing, and regulatory requirements. Suppliers of fish feed, equipment, and packaging were also present to help fisherfolk expand their operations.

BFAR officials reaffirmed their commitment to helping communities adopt responsible fishing practices while strengthening local economies. Through technology, training, and government support, the initiative aims to ensure that fisheries continue to sustain coastal communities in the region.
